Overview

The ILM Level 5 Award, Certificate, Diploma and Extended Diploma in Operational Leadership and Management Skills is a brand-new qualification from ILM, designed for experienced managers, department heads, and operational leaders who want to advance their careers with a recognised, flexible credential. Available in four sizes — Award, Certificate, Diploma, and Extended Diploma — this qualification lets you choose the depth of study that matches your ambitions and schedule. You can start with the Award and build up over time, or commit to the full Diploma or Extended Diploma from the outset. The programme develops the strategic insight, technical knowledge, and practical expertise needed to lead operational teams and drive organisational performance. Core content spans strategic leadership and culture, financial management, managing people and wellbeing, data-driven decision-making, project and operational planning, and sustainability and stakeholder engagement. As an ILM-accredited centre, VQ Solutions delivers this qualification 100% online with expert tutor support. Assessment is through a portfolio of real-world evidence — no exams — and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is supported for faster progression. Learners receive complimentary studying membership from The Institute of Leadership on enrolment. Clear progression pathways lead to ILM Level 6 qualifications and beyond. This qualification was introduced by VQ Solutions as a direct alternative to the Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship, following the withdrawal of government funding for that programme.
