Do I need an additional Health & Safety assessment?

Yes, all ECS card applications require the ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment (£56.50 excl. VAT, ~45 mins). We can administer this at our Harrogate centre so you can complete everything in one location. Note: The CITB (CSCS) H&S test is NOT accepted for ECS cards.

Where is the assessment centre located?

Our assessment centre is at Cambridge Terrace in Harrogate, just 5 minutes' walk from Harrogate Train Station. There's no on-site parking, but a multi-storey car park is 5 minutes away. Plenty of hotels nearby if you want to stay the night before.

What time does the assessment start and finish?

Assessments typically start at 9:00 AM with registration. Copper pathway usually finishes by 1:00 PM, Fibre by 4:00 PM, and combined assessments by 5:00 PM. Exact times are confirmed in your booking.

Can I reschedule my assessment?

Yes, you can reschedule with at least 14 days' notice without charge. For shorter notice, a rescheduling fee may apply. Contact us as soon as possible if you need to change your date.

What should I revise before the assessment?

Revise key skills like safe cable installation, termination (UTP/FTP for copper, fusion splicing for fibre), and testing (e.g., ILM, OTDR). The preparation handbook we send after booking covers everything in detail.

How do I get an ECS Gold Card without an NVQ?

The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is the route to an ECS Gold Card without completing a full NVQ. If you have 5+ years of cable installation experience, you can be assessed in a single day and receive your Level 3 qualification — which qualifies you for the ECS Network Infrastructure Installer Gold Card.

How long does an ECS Gold Card last?

An ECS Gold Card is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. You will need to renew by passing a Health, Safety & Environmental assessment before expiry.

What is the difference between ECS and CSCS cards?

Accepted Answer

ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) cards are for the electrical, data, and telecoms sector. CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards are for the general construction sector. Network cable installers need an ECS card, not a CSCS card. The ECS Health & Safety test is different from the CITB test.
