Business Administration Apprenticeship: The Complete Guide for 2026

Looking to build your career in business administration or develop the skills of someone in your team? At VQ Solutions, our Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship helps apprentices develop practical skills in communication, organisation, digital tools and problem-solving, with learning that applies directly to their work.

We deliver our programme over 8–13 months, combining online learning, live tutor-led classes and one-to-one mentoring. This guide explains how our apprenticeship works in England, what you will learn and how to take the next step.

What is a business administration apprenticeship?

A business administration apprenticeship combines a paid job with structured training, helping you develop your skills while gaining practical workplace experience (GOV.UK). Our Level 3 programme focuses on developing, maintaining and improving administrative services, with skills that apply across businesses, public sector organisations and charities.

That means looking beyond individual tasks to understand how your work supports the wider team. For example, instead of simply updating a spreadsheet, you might consider how to make the information easier for colleagues to use.

Whether you are searching for a "business administration apprenticeship" or a "business admin apprenticeship", this guide covers our Level 3 Business Administrator programme. Here is what you can expect from learning with us:

Programme detail Our apprenticeship
Level Level 3
Duration 8–13 months

Training A minimum of 348 hours of off-the-job training
Workplace Employment in a business administration role, working at least 30 hours per week

Who is our business administration apprenticeship for?

Our apprenticeship is designed for people working in business administration who want to strengthen their skills and prepare for greater responsibility. Apprenticeships can support both new recruits and existing employees, so you do not have to change employers to explore this route (GOV.UK).

You might be starting an office-based career, taking on new responsibilities or looking for a structured way to develop in your current job. If you are an employer, you might want to support a new team member or invest in someone who already knows your organisation.

Think about what you want to improve. Would better organisation, clearer communication or more confidence with business systems make a difference to your working day?

What will you learn with VQ Solutions?

Our programme brings together administration, communication, project support and business improvement, alongside the professional skills needed to work effectively with others. The focus is on practical development, with opportunities to connect your learning to your role.

Organisation and administrative processes

You will learn to develop, implement and improve administrative services, including document management and the use of IT tools such as Microsoft Office. You will also develop your understanding of business processes and project support.

For example, you could explore how to organise shared information more clearly or improve the way your team tracks outstanding tasks. Consider which everyday processes in your workplace would benefit from a fresh look.

Communication and teamwork

Our apprenticeship develops written and verbal communication, collaboration across teams and stakeholder engagement. These skills help connect the administrative role with the people and departments it supports.

Imagine preparing an update for a colleague who needs a quick answer, then explaining the same issue to a customer who needs more background. That is an opportunity to think about tone, clarity and what each person needs to know.

Problem-solving and responsibility

You will build your problem-solving and decision-making skills, with learning that also covers mentoring, coaching and preparation for management responsibilities. The programme encourages development beyond completing your own task list.

For example, you might suggest a clearer handover process rather than repeatedly chasing missing information. Or you could help a colleague understand a process you have learnt to manage confidently.

How long does our business admin apprenticeship take?

We deliver our Business Administrator apprenticeship over 8–13 months, with a minimum of 348 hours of off-the-job training. Our delivery combines online learning, live tutor-led classes and one-to-one mentoring.

When you enquire, talk to us about your role, previous experience and learning goals. We can discuss the programme with you and help you understand what to plan for before starting.

What support will you receive?

You will have access to our learning management system, with resources including videos, voice explainers and handouts, as well as over 30 live tutor-led online classes. Our experienced course mentors support apprentices throughout the programme.

Before you begin, think about how you learn best and any areas where you would like extra confidence. Bring those questions to your conversation with us so we can discuss your learning needs.

What are the entry requirements?

To join our Business Administrator apprenticeship, you need to meet the following programme requirements:

  • Employment: You must be employed in a business administration role.
  • Working hours: You must work at least 30 hours per week.
  • Right to work: You must have the right to work in England.
  • Education: You must not be in full-time education.

Apprenticeships are available from age 16, with eligibility checks applying to the individual and their circumstances (GOV.UK). If you are unsure whether your role or qualifications are suitable, speak to us rather than ruling yourself out.

What about English and maths?

Apprentices aged 16–18 at the start of training must achieve the required English and maths qualifications if they do not already hold suitable equivalents (GOV.UK English and maths guidance). For those aged 19 or over at the start, standalone English and maths qualifications are optional under the funding rules, with employer agreement where these are included in the training plan (2026–27 funding rules).

Tell us about your existing qualifications when you enquire. We will discuss what the requirements mean for your circumstances.

Will you be paid during your apprenticeship?

Yes. As an apprentice, you are an employee earning a wage, and you must be paid for training that forms part of your apprenticeship (GOV.UK).

From 1 April 2026, the apprentice minimum wage is £8 per hour for apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over in their first apprenticeship year (GOV.UK minimum wage rates). If you are aged 19 or over and have completed your first year, you are entitled to at least the minimum wage for your age.

Your employer determines your salary, subject to the applicable legal minimum, and your contract should confirm your pay. Check the advertised salary and working hours when comparing opportunities.

How will you complete the programme?

Our programme includes end-point assessment, with a knowledge test, project presentation, portfolio and professional discussion listed in our course details. You will have support from our course mentors throughout your apprenticeship.

As you learn, keep examples of work you are proud of and reflect on what improved. For example, note how you approached a problem, why you chose a particular solution and what you would do differently next time.

Why choose this apprenticeship for your team?

Our Business Administrator apprenticeship develops skills in planning, communication, business processes and stakeholder relationships, with applications across organisations of different sizes and sectors. It offers a way to develop administrative capability while supporting an employee's professional growth.

Think about where your team needs support. Perhaps you want more consistent record-keeping, clearer ownership of tasks or an employee who feels ready to take on project coordination.

Existing employees can undertake an apprenticeship as well as new recruits (GOV.UK). If you already have someone in mind, talk to us about their role and the skills you would like them to develop.

Is funding available?

Levy-paying employers can use apprenticeship funds for eligible training and assessment, and government funding is also available for employers that do not pay the levy (GOV.UK funding guidance). The support available depends on factors including the apprentice's age and the employer's circumstances.

Speak to us about funding for your apprentice before making assumptions about the cost. We can discuss your circumstances and the next steps for your organisation.

Where could the apprenticeship take you?

Our programme can support progression towards roles such as business administrator, office manager, executive assistant, operations coordinator or project support officer. It also develops skills relevant to future management responsibilities, including mentoring and coaching others.

Your next step will depend on your experience, interests and the opportunities available. Use the apprenticeship as a chance to identify what you enjoy and discuss your longer-term goals with your manager.
